Kingston joins the 16GB SDHC party

The memory card announcements at PMA continue — Kingston has just announced its first 16GB SDHC card. Sure, we’re happy for them, but at $231, it’s more expensive than SanDisk’s $179 16GB card — which comes with a USB 2.0 reader — and it’s certainly not as impressive as SanDisk’s new 32GB card. Also, your hair is frizzy and you look fat. But have fun at the party!

In an expression of remembrance for a historical moment in hair-trigger overreactions, artists all over the Boston area have taken to the streets armed with provocative LED signage. Paying homage to the “bomb” scare of January 31st, 2007 (which was actually just viral promotion for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie using LED art), creative pranksters have descended upon the city with electronic recreations of President Bush, Osama Bin Laden, and a number of other inflammatory images sure to rile the local authorities but-good. Truck on over to MAKE to see a collection of images, and if you happen to be in the Boston area, don’t miss a chance to snap some photos of your own!

The bits, they just keep coming — now that 16GB SDHC cards are old hat, SanDisk’s gone and upped the ante with these new 32GB cards. That’s the new record, but you won’t be able to get your hands on one until April, when they ship for $349. A 16GB version and a new 8GB Ultra II SDHC Plus with flip-out USB connecter will also hit in March for $179 and $99, respectively — but you know you want the big’un, don’t lie.

Track your Domino’s pizza online

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I eat a lot of pizza, one might even call me a connoisseur of the pizza pie. I sample the (usually) circular dishes from a variety of restaurants on a regular basis. I’d say about half the time I choose the option to have my food delivered. During those forty minutes or so, I’m constantly wondering exactly when my pizza will get here. Well the fine folks at Domino’s Pizza have gone above and beyond to make sure you know where your pizza is, and what it’s doing.

If you’re sitting at home wondering if your pizza has even left the store yet, you can hop on the Domino’s website, plug in your phone number and get the details. The website will tell you which of the five phases (order placed, prep, bake, box and delivery) your pie is in, and even when exactly it left the store.

I’m curious whether or not this works on carry-out orders. Domino’s is the one place that I don’t (usually) get delivery from, as I can almost see their store from my house. Every now and then I’m just too lazy to drive two blocks to get my food.

Slacker Portable begins shipping today

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Slacker’s Portable radio will begin shipping today, after what seemed like a long wait, it was officially announced back in November. The Portable player was ready to ship during mid-December, but sadly they pushed that back till late January. Today to be exact, and a quick check of the Slacker website shows a now updated page. Slacker was set up at CES and we were able to get a little hands on time, which just made us want one a little more.

If you have not placed your order already, the Slacker Portable player is available in three models, a 15 station (2GB), 25 station(4GB) and 40 station (8GB) model that will retail for $199.99, $249.99 and $299.99 respectively.

MacBook Air’s custom-built CPU going PC?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

That special Intel processor found in the MacBook Air could be getting a lot less special. PC Advisor, citing “a source familiar with Intel’s plans,” claims that a pair of PC makers will use the MBA processor. Not that this would be unexpected. The custom-built 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz Intel procs remember, are 60% smaller and consume less power than the typical Core 2 Duo while using the same 65-nm manufacturing processes. Of course, with Intel’s 45-nm Montevina platform scheduled to ship as early as May, the advantages gained by the processor will likely be short lived, though glorious if a PC maker can dethrone Apple of its claim to the world’s smallest thinnest laptop.

IOGear busts out a wireless USB CardBus adapter

We’re not certain making a huge investment in Cardbus adapters is the wisest financial decision you can make, but if you’re looking to add a little Wireless USB action to your older lappy in the most upgrade-unfriendly way possible, IOGear’s got you covered. The company’s new Cardbus WUSB adapter does pretty much what you’d expect, but doesn’t yet have pricing or availability details. Still, unless you’ve got a crying need to finally use that empty slot, we’d recommend you stick to one of the many USB-to-WUSB dongles trickling onto the market.

Review: Delonghi Magnifica Is a Magnanimous Mud Maker

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

You’re really, really hungover and in need of a powerful triple espresso shot just to get through the day. But that journey out to the coffee shop is just so harsh. Here’s where the Maginfica comes in. This elegant machine is, by far, the easiest of the bunch to use. The fact that it yields delicious espresso based drinks is just foam. Milk dispensing and cleaning systems are also outstanding. But regular drip coffee? Even with some of the best grinds we could buy, it didn’t have much better flavor than Taster’s Choice. But hey, when your head is pounding from pounding too many tequila shots the night before, lackluster mud is the least of your troubles. —Neil Gellar

WIRED
Superb cup warmer. Milk container cleans up nicely and has a large capacity Single push button easily cleans milk container.  Good value.  Front loading trays are convenient with limited counter space.

TIRED Milk canister must be removed to gain access to water tank. Grinder loud enough to wake the dead. Very few preset drink buttons.  Bean hopper is challenging and awkward to refill.
