White HTC Touch making its way to Bell

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

With the white version of the HTC Touch hot off the presses from last week’s announcement of the device for Verizon Wireless, it would seem as though Canadian mobile-teers are about the get the their own version of the white Touch.
Bell Canada has managed to grab a hold, and release the device even earlier than Verizon. The EV-DO support of the Touch will allow Bell users to take advantage of their high speed internet access.

Panasonic lights up on Wind power

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Tokyo is well known for it’s lights. Blaring ads that rival Time Square and soak up the power grid while doing it. Godzilla stomping on buildings while the Neon lights explode. But over at Panasonic Center, environmentally conscious designers are changing that high powered perception with a design that probably had a kid’s toy as it’s inspiration.

Designed with a combination solar array and wind generator, the streetlights around the building look like a pinwheel of sorts, and can charge either during a sunny or windy day. In fact, the lights can generate their own electricity even at night thanks to the solar turbines built into the post. Power is stored in the batteries that are stored in the base of the streetlight. What a great idea for cutting civic costs. So, rather than having the taxpayers fit the bill, why not have Mother Nature provide all the light? And Panasonic Center is the ideal place to showcase the idea as visitors to the center come to see the latest ideas in technology being developed by the company.

In a time where city budgets are being slashed, here’s hoping that the idea catches on.

Video here.

SanDisk presents 32GB memory card

In the world of digital cameras and every other gadget related to photos, all the attention right now is going to the PMA 2008, the Photo Marketing Association trade show.

With that being said, SanDisk has presented a new memory card with 32GB of storage capacity. The type of card is on the Ultra II SDHC category, and was specially made for video cameras.

While the 32GB version will only become available in April with a cost of $350, there is another version with less capacity - 16GB - that will hit the shelves on March and has a price tag of $180. In case you want something smaller, there is still another model with a special feature, it has 8GB and comes with a USB plug so you can easily connect it to a computer to transfer data. The other models also include a MicroMate USB card reader.

Supertelephoto Zoom Lens

Still on the PMA 2008 topic, a new and expensive lens has popped up thanks to Sigma. The beast costs $34,000 and is suppose to be use by photographers of wildlife, sports, and other subjects. As expected by the price, the new Sigma lens features a huge zoom range and a wide aperture as well.

On the lens itself, there is space for a LCD screen that displays information related to the zoom, a slot to insert filters so the photos can have that special feeling (and look), and last but not least, zoom settings, and a lithium-on battery.

Samsung SGH-P520 Review - MobileBurn

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

MobileBurn reviews the Samsung SGH-P520 and writes, “The SGH-P520 Armani phone from Samsung is adequately equipped for most typical multimedia type functions. The on-board 3 megapixel digital camera, which is equipped with a flash, takes reasonable photos as long as the subject is not too close and there is plenty of light, and it appears tailored for scenery shots rather than people shots. The camera’s user interface is nice and intuitive and easy to use, and I like how swiping motions can be used to change the digital zoom or brightness level, even though this is not obvious. The photo viewer application, however, is painfully slow at times and even though it, too, has a nice interface, the overall sluggishness of the system detracts greatly from the user experience. The camera can be used for recording decent video clips at up to 352×288 pixel resolution. The P520 has about 60MB of internal storage available and ships with a 1GB microSD card in the box.”

Spark Universe cp-11s PMP

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Spark Universe is showing off their latest PMP, the cp-11s. A very UMPC looking device with some strange specs. The cp-11s runs Windows CE 5.0 and features a touchscreen 16:9 display, built-in Wi-Fi, USB 1.1 port and SD/MMC card slots. The cp-11s has support for Skype, MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files. Sadly it only comes with a low 64MB of RAM.

The cp-11s can handle AVI, WMV, ASF, 3GP, DivX, Flash and MPEG-4 videos, MP3, WMA and WAV audio files, JPEG, BMP and GIF images, and Flash, 3D and NES/FC games as well as an e-book reader. No word on availability or pricing.

asteroids coffee table blasts into hyperspace

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

If one of your fondest memories of youth is getting blisters on your fingers from zapping space debris and aliens, these most-excellent coffee tables belong in your living room.

Designer C. Macintosh (”Mac”) Morrison plans on creating a limited run of these tables (probably no more than 50 of them) for release sometime this Summer or Autumn. In addition to the Asteroids (aka “Storm”) design, Mac is working on a Space Invaders (aka “Invasion”) table as well.

The images shown above are early concept versions, and will likely change in the final production pieces. There’s no word on pricing yet, but I’ll post back with more details when I’ve got some.
