Sony Ericsson G700: The Organizer

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Sony Ericsson has come up with yet another smartphone, this time codenamed G700, and according to SE, it is made for the masses.

Based on the Symbian UIQ platform, the G700 features a 2.4-inch QVGA touchscreen, just like all smartphones should. One of the new functions is a new home panel, and the inclusion of stickie notes.

In terms of multimedia, the new Sony Ericsson phone comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera to shoot photos, or record videos. In case you want to listen/buy music, the phone supports the PlayNow music store, but if you want something for free, there is FM radio. So far there is no information about its price or release date.

Still on the topic of Sony Ericsson and their new cellphones, another fresh addition is the W980, that goes straight into the Walkman line.

Since its specialty is being part of the Walkman line, the cellphone comes with premium HPM-77 headphones, and technologies to provide the best sound experience possible, such as clear stereo and clear bass.

On the other side of normal features, the upcoming (3Q 2008) cellphone comes with FM, bluetooth, 8 equalizers for the music, and HDSPA as the wireless connection.

Yahoo spurns advances, rejects Microsoft’s takeover bid

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

A report from the Wall Street Journal says that Yahoo has denied Microsoft’s $44.6 billion bid to buy the company which operates the most frequented site/portal on the internet today. Yahoo’s Board of Directors has determined that the $31 per share price that Microsoft offered “massively undervalues” the company. Yahoo’s board seems to be looking for a bid no less than $40 per share, which would bump Microsoft’s offer up an additional $12 million. Yahoo, over the last week since Microsoft’s offer, has considered a partnership with the giant of this fine series of tubes, Google.

Personally, I think Microsoft is trying to take advantage of the fact that Yahoo has recently slipped, by lowballing (relatively) them. However, Microsoft’s bid in the first place shows how low they stand in the web game, and the extra $12 billion they might have to pony up may not be too bad for them. Honestly, I think this is smart on Yahoo’s part, seeing as how a Microsoft takeover would take quite a while to get approved, and wouldn’t help either company all too much.

Stay tuned for more, as it happens.

The Sony Ericsson W980

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Sony Ericsson has plumped up its Walkman line just a tad today with the introduction of the W980, a pretty well power-packed flip sporting 8GB of internal storage, a generously sized external display, and something the company calls “Walkman on Top.” The technology (if you can really call it that) replicates the music player interface in its entirety on the external display, allowing full player control without popping the phone open. Other goodies include an FM transmitter and PlayNow support — a Walkman phone through and through, if we do say so ourselves. Look for it to launch in Q3 in quadband EDGE flavor with HSDPA 2100 (read: no good for use in the US). Sorry about the microscopic photo, by the way, SE’s site is having difficulty at the moment.

The Sony Ericsson Z770: “your life in a clamshell”

This is a phone we’ve seen in the wild on a couple occasions, but we had one detail dead wrong: the model number. It turns out that Sony Ericsson’s newest Z series flip is actually the Z770, not the Z660 we’d heard before. The company is billing the Z770 as a phone fit for people who need access to the internet (web and email, specifically) but aren’t necessarily interested in stepping up to a full-fledged smartphone, featuring “easy” email setup, zoom / pan features in the web browser along with an actual mouse pointer (anyone familiar with S60’s browser will get the idea here), and integrated support for Exchange ActiveSync. The GSM / EDGE 900 / 1800 / 1900, HSDPA 2100 handset will hit shelves in the second quarter in Vogue Red, Graphite Black, and Exquisite Gold.

Leapfrog releasing web-enabled Leapster2, new Didj handheld

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Much like cartoons, most gadgets and videogames are really not meant for kids. Let your toddler play Grand Theft Auto for a while or mess with your iPod and you’ll probably not be too happy with the results.

As a safer and more education alternative, LeapFrog Enterprises has been selling the Leaspter educational gaming system for about four years in retail stores across the US. This Summer (2008), LeapFrog will update the Leapster with web connectivity and also release a new handheld, web-enabled system called Didj.

The web element for both systems will be LeapFrog’s upcoming Learning Path where parents will be able to log in to track their children’s progress in each educational area.

Cell Phones don’t cause Cancer

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

While the headline may seem familiar it seems that the latest study in Japan that suggests that cell phones are not a brain cancer risk, is the first to look at the effects of hand set radiation levels on different parts of the brain. The study was conducted by the Tokyo Women’s Medical University and found “no increased risk of the three main types of brain cancer among regular mobile phone users.”

The study compared 322 brain cancer patients and 683 healthy people, where the cancer victims had one of the three most common types of brain tumor , namely glioma, meningioma or pituitary adenoma. After studying the radiation emitted, and rating them against sufferers and length of cell phone use they were able to conclude that the cell phone posed no danger:

Lead researcher Professor Naohito Yamaguchi said: “Using our newly developed and more accurate techniques, we found no association between mobile phone use and cancer, providing more evidence to suggest they don’t cause brain cancer.”

It has to be said that previous research has contradicted this latest research.
