Cell Phone SIM Card Spy

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

The cell phone SIM Card Spy is certainly an interesting device that allows you to save all data on a SIM card, ranging from last dialed numbers to deleted SMS messages. I suppose if you actually need to use this in your relationship, it is pretty much over already. The Cell Phone SIM Card Spy retails for $149 and would prove to be the bane of cheating spouses and partners everywhere.

iPhone and iPod touch get 1.1.4 firmware update

Apple’s 1.1.4 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch just hit the wires, courtesy of iTunes 7.6.1.9. Nobody knows what exactly is in store (SDK support, perhaps?), so obviously those jailbreakers out there might want to hold off while the braver souls among us give it a shot. For the record, no SDK has hit Apple Developer Connection yet, so take that for what you will. So far those who’ve successfully updated haven’t seen any changes, but we’ll keep you posted. So far the entire official word from Apple on the release seems to be “Bug fixes.” Typical.

Update: So far we’ve tested 1.1.4 on a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone and a non-jailbroken 1.1.3 iphone, and had zero problems with either, including intact music libraries after the procedure — your mileage may vary! We went through all of the system settings and can’t spot anything new. Multiple sources are claiming ZiPhone works, but it’s not fully tested and may be a little wonky at this point, so proceed with caution.

Update 2: Well, ZiPhone claims to have worked, but there aren’t any icons for our installed apps, and we can’t uninstall or reinstall. Also, it’s worth noting that since this is a rather hefty update in terms of file size, and yet added features seem non-existent, our best guess is that this paves the way for an SDK in the coming weeks.

Speck SeeThru Vaio Cases

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Want to keep your precious Vaio SZ and HP 6000 series of laptops safe from scratches? Let Speck have the honor with their SeeThru Vaio Case. These transparent shields will come in red, pink or clear colors, but somehow they seem to do a half-past six job by offering protection only for the laptop’s cover while the bottom remains partial to scratches and nicks. Well at least half the protection is better than none - perhaps future iterations will prove to be more accommodating.

HP Mini-NB Ultra-Mobile-PC to Launch with 2 Million Units?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

The new hot UMPC is the Mini-NB (also called HP 2133) that is small, sexy and bound to be “cheap” ($500-$800), although the pricing is not official yet. The latest news that we got from Taiwan is that HP did order 2 million units. I have stopped short from buying an Eee PC (but it is hitching me hard) but I do not know if I will resist getting the Mini-B, 2133 or whatever HP decides to call it.

Starbucks to close three hours for employee training

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

While Starbucks shutting their doors for a few hours during the day would normally not make for good news here on Gadgetell, we are more than a little curious as to what they could be getting trained on, or perhaps for. Starbucks has announced they will be shutting down for three hours today. Beginning at 5:30 pm and running through 8:30 pm local time, all stores will be shutting down for employee training.

While it could be as simple as learning a new payment system or how to better make those wonderfully addicting drinks, we are hoping this has something to do with the recent AT&T Wi-Fi announcement. Of course the official word seems to be that the training will “foster enthusiasm in its 135,000 U.S. employees and improve the quality of drinks made by Starbucks baristas.”

Just in case you are in need of that caffeine fix, like I imagine we will be, Dunkin Donuts has stepped up to take any business that may come from the Starbucks training session. Beginning at 1pm and running till 10 pm they will be offering 99 cent lattes, cappuccinos or espresso’s.
